As of June 28, 2025, the accessibility act for websites has come into effect. Are you an entrepreneur building your own website without professional help and want to get started? Here I will share some easy steps and tips I’ve learned along the way to help you make your site more accessible.
Why is accessibility important?
Accessibility means that everyone — regardless of abilities or disabilities — can use and understand your website. It’s not just about following the law; it’s also about reaching more customers and creating a positive impression.
How do you get started?
Think about your users first. Consider who will visit your site and what their needs might be. Simple things like clear headings, good contrast between text and background and descriptive alt text for images make a big difference.
Use an accessible CMS or theme. If you’re using a CMS like WordPress, Sitevision or Squarespace, choose themes or templates labeled as accessible. Many platforms, wordpress being one of them, also offer plugins or tools to help you test accessibility.
A simple manual check. Do what you can with what you have. Increase your browser zoom to 200% (or more) and see how your site behaves. Is the text still readable without having to scroll sideways? Do images stay sharp or do they become blurry? Look at your page’s colors: Is the text easy to read against the background? Are your images clear and high resolution? Is the page organized and easy to follow, or does it feel cluttered and confusing?
Write clear and simple content. Avoid complicated words and long sentences. Use bullet points and short paragraphs. This helps everyone, especially people with cognitive disabilities.
Final Thoughts
Getting started can feel tricky, especially as an entrepreneur (not a web developer) trying to figure out exactly what your site needs. The good news is, you don’t have to do everything at once. Start small. Also, many CMS platforms are designed to support accessibility, with built-in features and tools that make it easier for you. Use these resources, they’re there to help!
